wolf teeth?
I think my horse has wolf teeth. What is the process for removing them and how long is a normal recovery time? I don’t know their size yet – the vet comes out next week. My horse is four years old. Do they have to put him under? How long is the procedure and can it be done at my barn?
If I use a hackamore, would it be ok to ride him the next day?
Removing wolf teeth is usually done under sedation at your stables with local anaesthetic put into the surrounding gum. The procedure usually takes 15-20 minutes including giving sedation and putting the local in. General anaesthesia is not needed. Recovery is very quick for the mouth itself, however it is usually wise to refrain from riding/bitting for a few weeks to allow the pain to go completely – time depends on how deep the tooth is and how much gum trauma there is following removal. Your vet will advise you of this.
