Name the pros and cons of energy efficient (spiral) light bulbs?
I’m not one of these ‘green’ freaks but I want to have a more energy efficient home since my house is about 7,400 square feet and these energy bills are getting higher every time.
Cons:
There is a very very long list of health risks which these bulbs both contribute to and cause, including some forms of cancer and epilepsy and some forms of light sensitivity, include the auto-immune disease lupus, the genetic disorder Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), certain forms of eczema and dermatitis, photosensitivity, and porphyria. People with ME have also been known to have bad effects from these so called “green” bulbs. The list is actually huge, including over 100 ailments. They also contribute to damaging eyesight, through the flicker effect.
Contains mercury – highly poisonous.
Extortionate costs of purchasing
Non-recyclable.
They are also not very good in rooms which the light is only on for a few minutes (ie. bathroom/toilet).
Pros:
Less energy usage
Apparently a longer lifespan (though I have known ordinary bulbs to last well over 20 years)
Really, if you want to save energy, cost of buying, and save your health, I would consider fitting your home out with white light LED’s. they cost almost nothing to buy, last longer than energy saver bulbs and use less than 1000th (yes, you read correctly, less than 1 thousandth) of the electric of an energy saver bulb. I would also use mirrors wherever possible to increase the light effect…
