Somalia, Long John Silver and the UN
What do Somalia, Long John Silver and the UN have in common? The answer, unfortunately, is confusion.
Somalia is a regime without a central government. The country would be one of Abbott and Costello routine, little more than a vaudeville act in uniform and machetes, were it not for the machetes. Who's on first? Best: Who is in Mogadishu?
Now to Long John Silver, the character that Robert Louis Stevenson cobbled from "Chronicles Pirate Life "by Defoe and confused with its own editor limping, William Ernest Henley, to form a man by turns brave and cowardly, about good and evil at times. In other words, silver is a paradigm of modern moral relativity. It is neither very fine nor very bad. I would say that this character is confused. Put it in the twentieth century, Sartre sic on it and would almost existential.
Which leaves the United Nations: a body that speaks quasigovernmental and means little by little or a lot and says. (These are the confused minds that not only put Syria on its Security Council, but also named Syria as the capo capo of the Presidium Council. Syria, for those who are concerned about these issues, has been linked to assassinations, the development of nuclear weapons and aiding and abetting the terrorists. It is a country that should be the development of pistachio nuts rather than plutonium. The market, I imagine, is much better these days pistachios, as almost every country can make plutonium. I mean, if the North Koreans to mount a nuclear warhead, plutonium must be the month as last. You must be really advanced to grow perfectly pistachio little crazy. But I digress. . . As the United Nations)
Almost every family has an aunt or uncle with dementia. We invite you to dinner at Thanksgiving and I can not wait to leave. That is the UN is to always have moments high and sliding of silver in their pockets. (See oil for food scandal, for example.) Hardly knows whom to condemn and to be commended. The UN has no difficulty condemning and praising the same countries, sometimes in the same week, sometimes the same day, sometimes in joint resolutions that the ambassadors are not according to which you agree with him.
These three parts confused, unfortunately, collectively and cumulatively contributing to piracy along the Red Sea and Indian Ocean.
Somalia has no functioning government and is run by warlords of competition, militias and terrorist groups. You can not provide basic services to its citizens who are poor, hungry and uneducated, except theft and murder, and who have learned through experience.
Why blame a Long John Silver of slander of this African country? Long John Silver's confusion of character is our own confusion about his character. He is a pirate, and therefore a romantic character, a swordsman, a privateer, mythical through films and literature. Close your the eye and say the word "pirate" and guarantee that not imagine a ragged hungry Somalis into the sea.
The Somalis who attack innocent are not adventurous, and is nothing remarkable in its cruelty.
There was little or nothing admirable about pirates a few centuries. They were also murderers. I have appointed Francis Drake Knight and became a "gentleman." It was not a pirate of the time, but the service of the Royal Navy, which needed his skill in the fight against the Spanish, but there is no need to be overly technical matter is. Privateers became pirates and privateers became pirates when the mood and the money were in true. We are entitled to our myths. They help get us through a boring day, but we must not confuse myth with reality. Long John Silver and his pirate progeny may be devilish rogues, but the Somali pirates are nothing more than demons. There is romance in a beheading or a rescue. Such acts of cruelty and cowardice.
The Security Council, in a unanimous vote, adopted a resolution allowing foreign navies to tackle Somali pirates 1800 miles along the coast throughout the country. unanimous? Warships? The UN did this?
Where is the confusion?
The resolution limited to Somalia, and accurate for the UN because piracy is a violation of international law. The fight against piracy should not require a permit. Somalia only need invite other countries to enter its territorial waters and the sea are possible. The controversy is what did not happen, that countries left out of the resolution – as, for example, all countries across the African continent. China, Vietnam and Libya, according to the BBC, only voted for the resolution because it will affect the sovereignty from other countries. Why risk the goodwill of the dictatorships in other languages of the resolution applies to – say – West Africa, which is also beset by pirates? And, as coincidence would have it, has taken advantage of natural resources. . .
This is where the three parties meet at the crossroads. They totally confused, can not determine the difference between what is right and what is in your best interest.
By way of coda, the Somali government – as is (or not) – Is the fight against Islamic terrorists. The Ethiopians are fighting al-Qaeda in Somalia and help prop up the current leaders. Terrorists do not speak to UN or meet with government representatives from Somalia until the Ethiopians leave. The Somalis are in later want to try this treatment. Of course there may be need that the talks if the Ethiopians leave, because terrorists tend to avoid talking after taking charge of a country. They prefer to throw tied the true believers bombing dissenters.
Terrorists are not confused. They want to Somalia, they have no romantic notions about pirates and without fear of the United Nations seems, then, the only condition worse than the confusion is the lack of confusion. doubloons someone?
