Jesus is Loco
Now the publicans and sinners came to listen. And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them. "
Then he told them this parable: "What man of you, having a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, not leave the ninety-nine in the open field and go after the lost until he finds it? And when he finds it, puts it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, meets his friends and its neighbors, saying: "Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep which was lost." Only then, I say, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety and nine just persons who need no repentance.
Or what woman having ten silver coins and loses one coin, not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she finds it, his friends and neighbors, saying: "Rejoice with me, I have found the coin that was lost. "So, I tell you that there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
And he said: "There was a man who had two children. And the younger of them said to his father:" Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me. " And he divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a trip to a distant country, and there he squandered finances as reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine in that country, and began to be in need. So he went and got a job with one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he longed to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.
"But when he came to himself, said, 'How many hired servants of my father's have bread to spare, but here I'm starving! I will arise and go to my father, and I say, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I'm not worthy to be called your son. "Treat me as one of your servants." "And he arose and came to his father. "While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said:" Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. "But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fatted calf and kill it, and eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead and is alive again, was lost and is found. 'And they began to celebrate.
"Now his elder son was in the field, and as he came and drew near the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what that was. And he said: "Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him safe and sound." He was angry and refused to enter His father came and begged him, but he answered his father: "Look, all these years I have served you and never disobeyed orders, however, never gave me a kid, I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf! "And he said, 'Son, thou art ever with me, and all I have is yours. It was just to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother yours was dead and alive, was lost and is found. '"(Luke 15)
Those who have followed my antics this week – my brief appearances in several TV news and my statements that have appeared in The Australian as well as some local newspapers, all focused on my support for our local Islamic cleric, Sheik Mansour – do not be surprised to know that I've had my share this week, phone calls and emails abusive unpleasant.
"Idiot! ',' What do you think you're doing? ',' Have you any idea of who and what trying? ',' Why do not you deported back to Iran? ", Etc, etc. The basic message I've always been disgraced by the relationship with this guy, and is never clear whether that is because he believes it is a terrorist or Muslim or simply because it is simply because they see it as an Arab (Which, ironically, which technically is not).
Either way, I confess that I found most reassuring when I read the Gospel reading for this week and recalled the fact that most critical of Jesus used to the face for the company chose to keep. And as my most eloquent critic this week retired clergy-person, so note that it was the religious leaders of Jesus' day that made the most fuss about her bad taste in friends. Them shook their heads and murmured: "This man receives sinners and eats with them!"
And I have always believed that is the second part of the statement that has generated more crime – not so much that he welcomed "sinners, but that He ate with them!
For most of the world can give a warm welcome. Think about it: who are the most warm and friendly people you meet in a day to day? I think the answer has to be spruikers.
Is that the correct term? I'm thinking both of the guys that are out of the strip joints in Kings Cross, trying to encourage to come in (and believe me – who wore a clerical collar does not deter them from trying). I'm thinking of the very warm and friendly characters that greet you when passing through a mall, in general, because they want to give it a new credit card or maybe you enroll in a monthly contribution to a great cause.
And these people are usually smart search or gay men, well dressed young people who smile and grab you and look you in the eye and say, "I'd really like to talk to you a few minutes. Could be can? "And suckers like me blush and say," What … you really want to talk to me? Bah! "And then we realize they are dealing to sell something.
And for many people their experience of the church is like that too. The place is warm and inviting and full of happy, smiling faces, but in the end we're just trying to sell something – our own particular religious package (for which ultimately we hope that our 10% too!). Kierkegaard said the church and the theater were very similar, except that in the theater there would be a sign on the door that tells you exactly how much it would cost to enter Kierkegaard said that he could never find a church that will be honest with him!
In any case, there is a difference between people welcoming and eating with them. By the time you eat with someone to come to the same level with them. You do something characteristically human with them, and they have to leave the field of play, and interact more like humans equal.
Quite rightly, many of you will appreciate that the revolution we have done in building a bridge of friendship to the community Islam in this area came when no formal dialogue or discussion together, but when we sat down to share a meal together! Then, they started the fears and prejudices to make way for a relationship of trust and mutual respect – when we sat down and ate together.
As I said, eating together is a very human activity, and is possibly the best option after boxing and wrestling somebody, in terms of who is a good way to get to know them. Jesus used to eat with these people. He not only welcome them in, sit in the corner and preach to them. He sat and ate with them and drank with them and laughed with them, to the point where it was, of course, to the synagogue (and religious people in general) a bad name.
Dirty people, greedy people, people whose breath reeked of alcohol, individuals whose morality and social position were highly questionable, people would not trust around your children, people who do not want to leave home when they call the front door.
And why could not Jesus just do their bit by scooping out a bowl of porridge in the cafeteria and the elimination of self to a safe place where could preach in these people and tell them to repent!
But he does not do that. He was down with these people and eats with them, and drink with them, and laughs with them, and dialogues, with them, and the religious ask why, because they can not make sense to him!
And so Jesus tells a story – In fact, He tells three stories of three very strange parties:
"What man of you, having a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, not leave the ninety and nine in the open field and go after that which is lost until he finds it? And when he finds it, puts it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, meets to their friends and neighbors, saying: Rejoice me, because I have found my sheep which was lost. "(Luke 15:4-6)
What man among you, having a hundred sheep, not behave as if he loses a sheep?
Now I know that we tend to treat this as a rhetorical question, but I tend to think it is a very good question. "What man among you who behave this way with their sheep?" I think the obvious answer is that neither one of us would behave like – walking up hill and down dale the search, while leaving 99% of our flock open and exposed – all for the sake of a sheep. Nobody in their right mind would behave like that, surely, much less hold a party for the sheep when we found him!
My kids went to a 'sweet party yesterday birthday. "Yes, it was a birthday party for a dog I'm not going to tell you my first reaction when I realized that once appeared in a game dog, but, on reflection, the concept has a strong biblical precedent!
Or what woman having ten silver coins and loses one coin, not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently till she find it? And when she finds it, his friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me because I found the coin that was lost. "(Luke 15:8-9)
What woman among you, do not behave like that? Well … in my experience the only women on a rampage that older women who have dozens of cats living with them and are no longer able to manage their own hygiene properly!
Well-balanced people are not obsessed – night and day expenses giving the house upside down to locate a small coin has been dropped, not to mention the organization of a party once we found it – a match that will surely cost more than a Silver Coin to host!
Or what the father of you, having two children, if a son takes his inheritance and run, no wait at the door, night and day, in hopes of getting back home?
OK, I'm paraphrasing, but I think I know the story as well as me. And of course, the strength of this story is starting to do the other two stories seem a bit more understandable, as it seems now that we've been talking about a relationship between a father and son all the time, and we parents know full well how crazy it can be obsessive when it comes our own children!
"What kind of crazy father would behave like that?" Jesus asked.
Click OK. I hear you, Jesus! I respect the father mad. I'm there with the crazy father! I know what is going mad with worry for her children, and understand that there is nothing able to do – not so blatant insult, no action so hurtful and there is no sin so terrible that still do not love them to death and yearns for the day only to turn back to from the pen and go home!
And, as I say, the strength of the third story that culminates in the third is starting to do the other stories look sensible. The pastor, women and the father – who are each in their obsessive love, are extravagant in their donations each, and their passion makes them do crazy things, and yet the joy of homecoming Prodigal make sense of the whole passage … except for one thing – the fact that Jesus not only sinners, but welcomed ate with them!
Because if history had not begun well, with criticism of the religious about the company Jesus kept, could have been forgiven for assuming that Jesus had been partying with ex-addicts, former prostitutes, once the tax collectors and sinners once-in-a-time. But if that were the case, the religious establishment have never had a problem!
If Jesus had been spruiking only people in the synagogue and then a preacher, holding a call the altar and prayer, teaching, and (finally) partying with the respondents – who changed his life, left the drink, changed their ways, they left their posts working in the tax office and got / or sex industry and jobs at a respectable bank – the Pharisees would not have had a problem with Jesus!
The problem was that Jesus not only welcomed these people. He ate with them and drank with them! And not only eat and drink with these prodigal sons to return home. He ate and drank with them while we were yet sinners lot!
And if Jesus did in the hope that by showing the love and grace I could find their way home to his Heavenly Father, or Jesus considered his eating and drinking with him coming home to form a class by itself, remains the fact that Jesus not party with them after they were organized. The first party! He party anyway! And I'd like to believe that he party hard!
And so the pastor seems a little crazy, doing so worked throughout his one lost sheep, and she seems even more crazy, totally obsessed with his lack of a coin. and the father is of course, completely irrational in their refusal to give up hope for his prodigal son, and yet it is Jesus who is the craziest of all, passionately in love reach everyone – regardless of their own safety and reputation, eating, drinking, partying with cozy and lost sheep, prodigal sons, daughters, rebels, people with the reputation and the reputation of people who do not, people who have overcome their addictions and people who did not have the sick and well, rich and poor, remorseful and repentant al.
He welcomed everyone and ate with them! And we, who are welcome and should be followed by lunch with them too.
