Diet or Exercise for a Flat Belly?
“I’ll just sneak one little cookie in. I know I’m cheating, but I’ll work it off tomorrow.”

How many of these statements sound familiar to you?
For most people (yes, that means you), losing weight is such an ordeal that we’re constantly looking for shortcuts to ‘cheat’ those pounds away, with minimal time and effort. And so, when it comes to losing weight, most of us would gladly hop on to the treadmill, or trade in the salad bowl for a brisk walk, 3 days a week. I mean, who wants to deal with deprivation and guilt pangs when you can easily burn your dietary sins away with an hour at the gym… right?
So, why does everyone go on and on about diets? Are they really that important?
Watching what you eat plays a very important role in busting those flabby pounds for a number of reasons:
- You’ll need much more exercise than you think you do, in order to make good the damage:
9 times out of 10, most binge eaters don’t really know what’s in their food, in terms of its nutritional content. And so, even as you gobble down a cheeseburger, a helping of fries and a small soda as a between-meal snack, you’ve added on more unhealthy fat, refined carbohydrates and sugar than a week of cardio can wipe away. Surprised?
To put things a little more in perspective, here’s a quick checklist of your favorite cheat-meals and the amount of exercise it would take to erase the damage to your waistline:
- Cheeseburger and fries: 88 minutes of high intensity aerobics
- Large hamburger with fries: 105 minutes of jogging
- Fish and chips: 114 minutes of brisk walking
- 3 pancakes with butter and syrup: 78 minutes of energetic dancing
- Large taco: 110 minutes of walking
- Chocolate donut: 36 minutes of brisk walking
- Lemonade: 16 minutes of walking
So, if you’ve had a hearty breakfast of pancakes with all the frills, a taco lunch followed by a cheeseburger for dinner, you’ve already chalked out close to five hours of exercise for yourself… and that’s not counting all the little cookies and sodas you sneak in between meals.

Although fast-food purists argue that meat, bread and lettuce are pretty much the same as a balanced carbohydrate, protein and veggie meal, the truth is that you’re eating the wrong kind of carbohydrates, way too much fat, sugar and sodium. And so, even if you do punish yourself with excruciating workouts, the refined carbohydrates and sugar gradually leach vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients from your body, leaving you starved on a cellular level.
- Fast food can actually make you eat a lot more than you ideally should:
When your body is starved for nutrients, your brain begins to generate hunger pangs even though you’ve eaten a sufficient number of calories. What’s more, the high refined carbohydrate content of these foods breaks down and is digested very rapidly, causing a spike in your blood glucose levels. To counter this spike, your body secretes a hormone called ‘insulin’ which packs away the glucose and stores it as fat for later use. Your blood glucose levels then crash, causing a ‘glucose low’, which your brain interprets as hunger pangs. And so, it begins to look instant energy sources and generates cravings for fatty, sugary foods… thereby triggering the glucose-insulin cycle all over again.
- A balanced diet boosts your metabolism, allowing you to burn more fat without any change in your everyday lifestyle:
A nutritionally sound eating plan which combines whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats increases the amount of lean muscle mass in your body. This in turn, increases your basal metabolic rate, which amount of energy your body uses to simply sustain itself. A meal rich in whole fruits and vegetables also takes longer to digest owing to its high fiber content, keeping you full for longer. Live foods which are closest to their natural state contain bio-enzymes which help in digestion and absorption. This allows your body to glean maximum nutrients from your meals, thereby nullifying your cravings for sugary, greasy snacks.
When combined with a strategic exercise routine, a healthy nutritional program can trim that spare flabby tire around your midriff a lot faster and more permanently than either diet or exercise by themselves. The key here is to ensure that your diet allows you a steady supply of energy, a generous amount of lean protein and ample doses of heart-healthy fats, in addition to vitamin-packed fruits and vegetables.
