Roll Up Garage Doors: Best When Space Is A Premium
Let’s face it. If you live in the city, space is a premium. There are no ifs, buts, and when’s about this realization. The limitations of space in the city have also caused the development of housing areas located in the suburbs. While there is more living space in such area, there is the added cost of commuting to the city. For couples with families, this has been a good compromise as the suburbs enable kids to live a in a relatively good environment with good schools, clean air, and space for them to play and be children for as long as they can, while they can. Living in the city is more fitted for single professionals and couples without kids at the moment.
Maximizing living space has become a worthy challenge for designers and they have been apt to the cause. Cross utilization of spaces have made things more interesting. Garages are now being used as makeshift storage spaces, if not work areas and guest rooms. Even the designs of garage doors have been done in order to optimize space. Up and over traditional garage doors are being replaced with roll up garage doors and the contents of the garage doors are not cars these days but maybe the home office or a mini guest room. Garage door materials have also been innovating in its material, opting for ceramic or composite materials that are lightweight and sturdy. The newest garage door materials are the same materials being used for today’s car bumpers and the like.
In extreme cases like cities that are space challenged like Tokyo, car designs have become narrower and taller to fit the designs of garages. In some cases, the garage is designed so tight that all passengers save for the driver must get off before the car enters the garage. The driver has enough space to park the car and then transfer to the back part of the car whether this is the sliding passenger door or the 5th door latch at the back to get off. For specific Japanese made cars like the Mitsubishi Delica or the Toyota Lucida with its sliding passenger doors and narrow car widths, the purpose of the designs of such cars along with its sliding passenger doors was to make it relatively easier for these cars to fit in a urban and congested city with extremely limited space. Obviously, all garage doors in such areas are of the roll up type.
As space will always be a challenge in big cities, it is clearly evident that technology and design are up to the challenge into making the area more livable and workable. We somehow find a way to make things work. That is truly the human spirit at its best given the current situation.
