What causes the colour of glass in a pair of polaroid sunglasses to change when light passes through?
Safety glass, like the glass in a bus shelter for example, is made of a ‘sandwich’ of tempered glass layers and plastic film. That stops it from shattering when it’s broken, and it also makes the glass birefringent. That causes different colours, which travel at different speeds, to have different polarizations as they exit the glass. Normally this has no visible effect since our eyes are insensitive to polarization, but by wearing polartized glasses or looking through a polarizing camera filter we can see them. Try rotating the filter about its central axis, and you will see the spotty pattern shift and change.
Another wacky effect is visible in certain car windshields. I believe in these cases the windshield has been coated with a very thin layer of metal so it can act as a radio antenna while still being transparent. When you view these windshields through polarizing filters, the entire windshield appears gold or purple, but viewing it without a filter gives you no clue that there is anything unusual.
Here’s another interesting polarizer experiment. If you take a polarizer and pass light through it the light will be filtered into that polarization — let’s say horizontally polarized. Nearly all of the light passes through. Then, add another polarizer rotated 90° from the first along their common axis (i.e., vertically polarized). Nearly all of the light will be blocked. Now add a third polarizer between the first two, oriented halfway between them. When that filter is in place, light will pass through the final polarizer!
