Theory of Color: The colors of paint Goethe
The knowledge of color mixing and use of contrast is contagious. But there are other effects of color, can not be explained by theory of color and more color wheel.
Even when I had the use of color, however, I realized that a white painted in black gets a different view of graffiti in black and white. When semi-transparent paint a white on black, it gets cold and bluish tone. And when semi-transparent paints a black and white, wear a warm tone, brown. Years later I learned that this phenomenon may be explained by the theory Goethe's color.
Goethe juggles wavelengths, atoms or break indexes – instead consciously uses only its own perception. He warned that to show the color (eg the atmosphere), needs light, darkness and a transparent material (such as air, water, glass, etc). Warm colors (yellow-orange-red) is shown when the darkness before dawn, and it looks blue when seen from their point of view, will come out before dark. In a prism, works on the same way. Of course, atoms and wavelengths are the truth of their own. But it is a truth machine. We see the atoms or wavelengths. Newton's theory of color is good for the construction of color TV, but the artwork was a disaster. More than once I heard my fellow-painters state color does not really exist, which is a purely subjective phenomenon, an illusion created by the brain. That's not something that an artist can work. Goethe's theory for me was a solution. Really helped me understand color. With Goethe's color theory can not build a color television, because it describes the ideal of nature itself. But Goethe's color theory is ideal for artists and graphic designers.
I took some watercolor classes two. They were experts in a method developed by a single watercolor (Liane Collot-d'Herbois) who took knowledge of Goethe as a base, and experimented with it to explore the characteristics of each single color. She also knew that the colors do not have to merge as a matter at all. Could carry out a bright magenta color, using only blue and yellow paint. The magenta was there for all to see. Even if it was only light, it seemed as if they painted. And we all know, do not magenta, when you mix yellow paint and blue – green tea, when you mix yellow and blue.
After my watercolor-lessons, I took this knowledge in oil painting and found that it works exactly the same how oil painting. When he painted a yellow ocher, and again a hidden blue (mixed with white), magenta tones are appearing. And if the paint transparent blue on yellow ocher, merge into a green.
The range of effects is reinforced by photographic reproduction. I worked a lot with graphics programs, and found that the range of the phenomenon is even greater when that image is reproduced on an LCD screen, and sometimes fortified extra print the image. Most of the time it occurs as an inexplicable magenta (pink) hue. When a black and white photo, and they have very balanced tonal values (light and dark), the stripes green and magenta appear. When played, you get blue. This also occurs when the color copy of a photo in black and white, with the lid open.
The effect the range is not about color mixing and light. It has to do with the effect of darkness or shadow. I discussed this with Goethean science teacher, he does not understand yet. But I'm sure you will understand some day.
There is still much to explore, when it comes to color effects. This is really a kind of science, although it is not machines, and we all know that science is a very slow process. But at least now I know why the reds look great when painted in white semi-transparent and blue look ugly when the paintings in this way.

is the color of the old grass I suppose that is the color of im trying to achieve.
Titanium + white + yellow through a bright red dye + a little burnt umber … this is my mix anyway. I hope it works for you too.
