How can you tell the difference between Cinnabar Lacquer and imitations, e.g. plastic?
I have a vase that I think is cinnabar applied to a metal vase and carved. I want to know if it is genuine cinnabar. And is there any way to tell its age?
Get a safety pin or even a small icepick – because of the wooden handle. Heat it up red hot in some fashion, and touch it to some place that’s hidden/out of the way. Just the point of it – as you do it, hold it to your nose and smell. Plastic will smell like plastic, and I’m not sure about cinnabar but it might smell like shellac – pine or something. Certainly cinnabar won’t smell like plastic. That’s the common test for what you are asking. Just be careful and heat the minimum in a hidden spot – on the bottom, usually, and you won’t leave hardly any mark, and it doesn’t take much to get a burning plastic smell.
