Are Pearls Made Naturally
The pearl is one of the first gems to be valued by humans. The oyster makes a pearl in response to a stimulus – as part of its defense against an intrusion. The intrusion can be natural, like a parasitic worm or it can be purposely introduced into the oyster’s body. If a pearl forms in response to a natural intrusion, it’s called a natural pearl. If a human contributes to its formation, it is called a Cultured Pearl.
Pearls In Oyster are considered organic gem stones because they are produced from the body of a living organism. There are two types of pearls, namely saltwater and freshwater. The most common fresh water oyster is the H.Cumingi which produces the lustrous and beautifully colored pearls such as white, peach, creme, pink, and lavender. Some fresh water pearls are enhanced by processing, to make a lovely dark colored pearl like a fresh water chocolate, aubergine, blueberry, etc. Fresh water pearls differ from saltwater pearls in that the later is more lustrous, rounder and harder. Fresh water pearls do not require bead nucleation, which makes a solid nacreous pearl. Generally oysters take at least two to three years to produce a fine pearl. Saltwater pearls are much more variegated than Freshwater Pearls in that it has several types of saltwater oysters that produce marvelous pearls.
The Tahitian oyster, P. Magaritifera produces the famous Black Pearl, usually quite large in size about 10 to 16 mm in diameter which is normal for these gems. Their colors range from a silvery hue to deep Blue Black. Many varieties of colors and shapes of these pearls are inspiration to jewelry designers. The magnificence of these pearls have become known world wide. Some of the largest Cultured Pearls in oysters are usually Tahitian. Such names as: avocado, peacock, rose and pistachio describe the colors of these organic gems. Just a single 18 mm pearl of good quality could be worth thousands of dollars in the market.
