Solve the following counting problems. In each case, the reasoning that led to the answer. (AA) palindrome is a word that reads the same forwards and backwards. How many letters, seven palindromes can be made from the English alphabet? (B) How many bit strings of length 10 starting with three 0s or 1s end with two? (C) How many bit strings of length 10 containing five consecutive 0s or five consecutive 1s? (D) Truth How many tables are there for the propositions with the variables? (E) Suppose you have n beads, each a different color, you need chain a necklace? How many different necklaces can you do? (A rolled collar remains the same and does not count as a different collar.)
Question (a) is especially difficult, as stated, because "the word" is not defined mathematically. If you rephrase the question to say something like "How many strings of seven palindromic letters can be made from the English alphabet? ", the answer is 26 ^ 4, because there are 26 possibilities for each of the first four places in the chain of seven letters. (The fifth, sixth, seventh and places are always determined by the third, second and first places respectively and therefore not included in the calculation.) This response allows such letters, chain 7 as "jklmlkj", which is clearly not any kind of word. If you insist on just words, the calculation can be done more to correct saying 24 ^ 3 x 6, where 6 is the choice of one of the six members, as every English word must contain at least one vowel. The latter estimate is not the number of palindromic words in English, but is the number of palindromic strings that must be examined to see if they are real words.
